From personal experience in the US, we are seeing more and more locations such as restaurants and cafes that are now using credit card chip readers not requiring you to swipe or insert your card.  You simply tap your card on the sensor or move it close to the sensor and it will read your card's information.

Since August 2007, all U.S. passports now come embedded with an RFID chip, intended to deter fraud and improve security. The chip contains the same information as on the passport's picture page, including a digital version of your passport photograph.

Thieves can carry portable RFID Readers and all they have to do is get close to you when passing by for it to instantly read your card or passport information.

If you see a symbol of radio waves on your credit card, it's likely RFID enabled.
