Restaurants

We plan to add more topics in the future when it comes to restaurants and dining but for now, we have only listed our experience from outdoor table dining in Italy and food sold by weight.

Outdoor Table Dining in Italy

When you are visiting tourist sites like the Pantheon in Rome or the Arena in Verona, you will find they are surrounded by shops and restaurants.

On a nice day or in the evening, there is nothing like sitting at an outside restaurant table having a view of the monument while enjoying a meal, a glass of wine and watching the people. Some of our best travel memories are from meals we had by some historic site.

When you dine at some restaurants, be aware that there may be an additional charge to sit at a table outside. It may be nominal, or it could be several Euros per table or even per person.

Our advice is to ask. Ask what the charge is to be seated at an outside table, so you are not hit with additional unexpected fees.

Once in Verona, we had the wait person suggest putting two smaller tables together to give us more room. It sounded like a nice idea and why not, as it was not crowded at the time and there were four of us. We found out later that our outside fee (which we were aware of), was now double – that was not expected!

Beware of food sold by weight

Don't make the mistake of thinking you are getting a great deal on your meal only to receive the bill at 10x the price because you did not notice the fresh catch of the day was being sold by the ounce.  If something seems to good too be true, it probably is.  If you are unsure about something, ask.

Be sure you understand the price of your food before ordering as some items, especially fresh fish in Italy may be sold by the ounce.
