Homeland Security / Transportation Security Administration (TSA)

If you understand what you are allowed to bring in your carry on bag and how to present them when you pass through security, the airport screening process can be much faster and easier.

You will more than likely want to carry on some small Travel Essentials such as your toothbrush, deodorant and other items which may not a problem, but bringing liquids or items considered as liquids such as toothpaste can be an issue.  As we know, you are only allowed to carry on liquids in limited quantities through airport security and you are also limited to a 1 Quart bag for containing them.

Make sure you are familiar with Homeland Security / Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations.

3-1-1 Rule for Carry-ons

  • 3.4 ounce (100ml) bottle or less (by volume)
  • 1 quart-sized, clear, plastic, zip-top bag
  • 1 bag per passenger placed in screening bin

*One-quart bag per person limits the total liquid volume each traveler can bring. 3.4 ounce (100ml) container size is a security measure.

You may have multiple containers of liquid in your single 1 quart zipper bag but each container may be no larger than 3.4 oz. (100 ml.)  So, you could bring a bottle of shampoo, conditional, toothpaste, shave cream, etc. totaling more than 3.4 oz. all together, but no single container may be greater than 3.4 oz. and they all must fit in a single 1 quart clear zipper bag.

See our page on Travel Essentials to help with purchasing items to carry on.

Carry on container

For liquids, you are allowed a single Quart Sized Clear Zipper Bag.

Non-liquid items such as a toothbrush, floss, etc. do not need to go into this bag.  Make sure items that are considered to be liquids such as toothpaste are placed in the bag.

There is no need to purchase a special bag for this, just use a typical disposable plastic sandwich bag in the 1 Quart size.
