Arriving at Terminal 1

If you arrive in Terminal 1, take the free shuttle train to Terminal 3, which is the easiest station to catch the RER B from. The shuttle will stop first at the car park PR then terminal 3. There are announcements in English as well as other languages so you can relax.

The CDG VAL shuttle train (6 mins) will take you to terminal 3 where you exit for the RER station. Trains operate about every five minutes so if you miss one, there will be another in just a few minutes.

Cake
Undoubtedly Alsace’s most famous cake, Kugelhopf is also baked in neighboring Austria, Germany, and Switzerland.

A lot of recipes feature a ‘soft’ variant of the cake: spongy and moist. The Alsatian tradition is to eat a much ‘dryer’ Kugelhopf, which some locals then dip in their morning coffee.

Getting There
Schloss Oberhofen is 7 km south of Thun on the eastern shores of the Thunersee. The castle is right next to the landing jetty of Lake Thun pleasure boats, making arriving by ship a very good option.

-or-
Walk to Wengen about 1 hour - harder hike

The section from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen is a great walk if you are looking to get your heart beating as it ascends most of the way. This walk will take you through the forest with glimpses of the Breithorn and Staubbach Falls cascading into the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Starting at Lauterbrunnen railway station follow the path past a multistory car park, over a river and along chalets into the hillside. At all junctions there will be yellow way markers guiding you to Wengen as the trail zig zags its way in a continuous ascent through a forested track until you reach Wengen. As you climb your views become more magnificent as you look down into Lauterbrunnen Valley and across to the Staubbach Falls.

Hike Männlichen to Klein Scheidegg
Thursday 27-Sep-2018 (12:00 PM) [1 Hr-30 Min]

Pre-Trip Activity Notes / Checklist

The hike from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is a fairly easy short route with only slight ascents and descents. From Kleine Scheidegg, there is a beautiful view of the Jungfrau massif. The trail leads through grasslands where many alpine flowers can be seen in Summer. This route is perfectly suitable for families with small children and for people who want to walk in the high mountains without too much effort. The trail can be rather crowded on beautiful days, as it is very popular among tourists.

Hiking time: 1h30
Difficulty: easy
Elevation: 2064 - 2233 m
Distance: 4.4 km
Terrain: meadow

Train back down to Grindelwald every 30 min.

Pre-Trip Activity Notes / Checklist

The Sunnegga-Rothorn valley station lies about 10 minutes’ walk from Zermatt railway station. A tunnel leads deep into the mountain to the funicular station.

Pick a clear day for another mountain journey you won’t soon forget.

In Zermatt you’ll board a funicular that climbs through the centre of the mountain to Sunnegga.

From there you can a gondola over Alpine pastures to Blauherd.

And lastly, from Blauherd you can hop on a state-of-the-art cable car, with space for 100 passengers in each cabin, for an epic ride to the top of Unterrothorn.

Once again, there’s a restaurant on the summit, and the views of the Matterhorn, glaciers and Monte Rosa massif are almost too good to be true on clear days.

Gornergrat Train

(A4) Sit on right side of train

The Gornergrat train goes from the village centre in Zermatt to Gornergrat (3,089 m) in 33 minutes. From this vantage point, one of the most beautiful mountain panoramas in the world opens up – with a view of the Matterhorn (4,478 m).

The Gornergrat Railway's lower station is in Zermatt, next to the main Brig-Visp-Zermatt Railway station. As the unofficial route map shows, there are half a dozen stops between Zermatt and Gornergrat--including Riffelalp and Riffelboden, which give access to two mountain hotels.

Total travel time is 43 minutes, and trains depart two or three times an hour throughout the year. (The day's first train normally leaves Zermatt at 7:05 am, and the last return train leaves Gornergrat at 7:07 p.m. From late October through late November and again in early to late May, the first train departs Zermatt at 8:00 am and the last return train leaves Gornergrat at 5:07 pm.)

About 15 minutes on foot from Zermatt is a fabulous landform that descends rather than rises.

Since the last ice age the glacial river, Gornervispe has sliced through the ancient and green-tinged serpentine rock to create a ravine that continues to deepen.

In the 1880s the gorge was made navigable on foot, and wooden footbridges grant wonderful perspectives of the tortured rock and the crystalline waters below.

(A4) There’s a strange natural phenomenon at around 15:00-16:00 on days in September, when the unique light gives the water a mesmerising turquoise glow.

Le Mur des Canuts, in the Croix Rousse, is a celebration of the silk workers of Lyon’s past. Every decade, it is altered to show the changes made to the district. In 1987, and subsequently in 1997, a huge tromphe d’oeil was painted to mirror the Croix Rousse district, its architecture, its traditions, and of course, the canuts (silk workers) of the past. It is located at the corner of the Boulevard des Canuts and the rue Denfert-Rochereau.
